CPR Certification Requirements for Athletic Trainers in Florida


Florida is a unique and special state, and it’s one of the states that has recently seen a surge of support for online-based CPR certification in recent years. 

Just like any state, it’s important to know what the acceptance is for online CPR certifications. Below we’ve prepared a list of the specific approvals of ProTrainings courses for Athletic Trainers in the state of Florida.

  • Athletic Trainers in District of Columbia are required to have an Healthcare provider level CPR/BLS (Basic Life Support) certification.
  • The Florida Board of Athletic Training requires Healthcare Provider level BLS/CPR, AED for all ages with a hands-on component.
  • Most employers will require a Healthcare Provider level BLS/CPR.
  • For continuing education; Athletic Trainers can claim CE credits for BLS/CPR Certification with a practical portion.
  • BOC requires to maintain CPR certification for Healthcare Providers with a practical skills component.
 

Course Content


Athletic Trainers in Florida usually need a Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification at the Healthcare Provider level. Required skills include; Adult, child and infant CPR, AED, and use of a bag-valve-mask. Some Athletic Trainers may also need a First Aid course as well, but this is determined by the employer.

 



Delivery Method

Athletic Trainers in Florida are required to do the Basic Life Support level of CPR certification for Healthcare Providers that includes a practical skills evaluation through in person or blended training process. 100% online CPR will only be an option upon the discretion of the employer or institution and is not accepted by the state licensing department or for continuing education credits for Athletic Trainers.

Some employers may require a specific type of training, or may leave it up to the State’s requirement. If you are not certain of your employer's requirement, make sure to check with them about both the training type and the required course content.

Board Statement:

Athletic Trainers (ATs) must be able to demonstrate ongoing certification in ECC throughout the reporting period. Although continuing education units (CEUs) are not awarded for ECC certification, ATs need to be current with the ECC requirements throughout the reporting period. Full details of this category are located in the “Certification Maintenance Requirements.”

Requirements:
  • Documentation must be kept for two years after the reporting period has ended
  • The only acceptable documents are original certification cards, original certificates of completion or photocopies (front and back) of certification cards or certificates of completion
  • Online ECC courses are acceptable if skills are demonstrated and tested by a certified ECC instructor, a voice assisted manikin (VAM) or a visual assisted manikin. The in-person exam can include video technology.
  • The instructor and card holder must sign cards or certificates of completion if a QR code is not provided
  • Letters provided by instructors are not acceptable

The Florida Board of Athletic Training requires Athletic Trainers to maintain a Healthcare Provider level CPR certification with a practical skills component that is BOC approved.

64B33-2.003 Requirements for Continuing Education.
(2) For purposes of this rule, an applicant or licensee certified by the Board of Certification (BOC) or its successor during the biennium can demonstrate compliance with the continuing education requirements of this rule by entering his or her BOC certification number and submitting a copy of his or her active certification card in the CE tracking system, along with proof of completion of (a) the prevention of medical errors course, and (b) current cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the use of an automated external defibrillator at the professional rescue level (e.g. Basic Life Support or higher certification).
