Athletic Trainers in Illinois usually need a Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification at the Healthcare Provider level. Required skills include; Adult, child and infant CPR, AED, and use of a bag-valve-mask. Some Athletic Trainers may also need a First Aid course as well, but this is determined by the employer.
Athletic Trainers in Illinois are required to do the Basic Life Support level of CPR certification for Healthcare Providers that includes a practical skills evaluation through in person or blended training process. 100% online CPR will only be an option upon the discretion of the employer or institution and is not accepted by the state licensing department or for continuing education credits for Athletic Trainers.
Some employers may require a specific type of training, or may leave it up to the State’s requirement. If you are not certain of your employer's requirement, make sure to check with them about both the training type and the required course content.

Athletic Trainers (ATs) must be able to demonstrate ongoing certification in ECC throughout the reporting period. Although continuing education units (CEUs) are not awarded for ECC certification, ATs need to be current with the ECC requirements throughout the reporting period. The Illinois Board of Athletic Trainers requires CPR certification with a practical skills component that adheres to the Healthcare Provider level training standards of the American Heart Association or its equivalent.
Section 1160.30 Application for Licensure by Examination
Any person seeking licensure as an athletic trainer shall file an application with the Division on forms provided by the Division. The application shall include the following:
4) Proof of current certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillation (AED) for Healthcare Providers and Professional Rescuers or its equivalent based on American Red Cross or American Heart Association standards.
